PRISM – Early Sepsis Prediction with Machine Learning Website

Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma

1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy refers exclusively to the "PRISM – Early Sepsis Prediction with Machine Learning" website of Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome (PRISM: Early Sepsis Prediction with Machine Learning), hereinafter referred to as the "Website", and should be considered an integral part of the Privacy Policy of the same.

2. What are Cookies

A "cookie" is a small text file that can be stored in a dedicated space on the hard drive of the device used by the user (e.g., computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) when visiting a website through their browser, and it may require the user's prior consent before being installed.

Through cookies, a website can remember the user's actions and preferences (such as login data, chosen language, font size, display settings, etc.) so that they do not have to be re-entered when the user returns to the site or navigates from one page to another.

Cookies are therefore used to perform computer authentication, session monitoring, and storage of information regarding the activities of users accessing a website. They may also contain a unique identification code that allows tracking of the user's navigation within the site for statistical or advertising purposes.

While browsing a website, users may also receive cookies on their computer or mobile device from websites or web servers other than the one they are visiting (so-called "third-party cookies").

Some operations could not be performed without the use of cookies, which in certain cases are therefore technically necessary for the proper functioning of the website.

There are various types of cookies, depending on their characteristics and functions, and they can remain on the user's computer or mobile device for different periods of time: so-called session cookies, which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed; and so-called persistent cookies, which remain on the user's device until a predetermined expiration date.

According to the applicable regulations, the use of cookies does not always require the user's explicit consent. In particular, so-called "technical cookies" do not require consent, as they are used solely to carry out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network or to the extent strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. In other words, these are cookies that are essential for the operation of the website or necessary to perform activities requested by the user. Among the technical cookies that do not require explicit consent for their use, the Italian Data Protection Authority (see the provision "Identification of simplified methods for the information and acquisition of consent for the use of cookies" of May 8, 2014 – hereinafter referred to as "Provision" – and, most recently, the "Guidelines on cookies and other tracking tools" of June 10, 2021 – hereinafter referred to as "Guidelines") also includes:

  • first-party and third-party statistical or analytical cookies, if tools are adopted that reduce the identifying power of the cookies and the third party does not cross-reference the information collected with other information already available, used to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the website itself;
  • navigation or session cookies, whose deactivation compromises the use of the services available on the website;
  • functionality cookies, which allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (e.g., language, products selected for purchase) to improve the service provided to the user.

Conversely, for "profiling cookies", which are aimed at identifying the user's preferences to improve and personalize their browsing experience and/or show them marketing communications in line with the preferences expressed during navigation, as well as for third-party statistical or analytical cookies, if tools that reduce the identifying power of the cookies are not adopted and the third party cross-references the information collected with other information already available, the user's prior consent is required.

3. Types of Cookies used by the Website and possibility of (de-)selection

The Website uses exclusively technical cookies, which are strictly necessary for its operation or to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. In particular:

  • technical navigation cookies: these cookies allow the Website to function correctly and display its content; their deactivation would result in malfunctions of the Website. Among the technical navigation cookies, session and functionality cookies are included, used to activate specific functions of the Website and to configure the Website according to your choices (e.g., language, etc.), in order to improve your browsing experience;

The Website does not use analytical or statistical cookies, nor marketing or profiling cookies, whether first-party or third-party.

In detail, the cookies installed through the Website are indicated below:

4. Cookie settings

Since the Website uses only technical cookies, no prior consent is required under the applicable legislation and no cookie-management platform is therefore present on the Website. The user can nevertheless authorize, block or delete (in whole or in part) cookies through the specific functions of their browser. To disable cookies or to get more information on how to set preferences on the use of cookies through your browser, you can consult the relevant instructions:

Attention: The user is informed that disabling technical cookies may result in the inability to use the Website and view its content. Disabling functionality cookies may cause some services or certain functions of the Website to be unavailable or not work correctly, and the user may be required to modify or manually enter some information or preferences each time they visit the Website. The language preference of the Website is stored through the browser's local storage (localStorage), which is not a cookie; it can be cleared through the browser settings together with other site data.
